How to Specify Deadline Before Auto-Restart for Update Installation in Windows 10
How to Specify Deadline Before Auto-Restart for Update Installation in Windows 10.
On Windows 10, when a new update installs, you get a notification letting you know that your device will restart automatically outside of your "active hours" to apply the new changes, and as needed, you can always reschedule a restart using the Windows Update settings.
On Windows 10, Microsoft has rolled out a setting which notifies you after downloading a feature update in Windows 10. In the end, you have a choice when to install the update, but there is a limit to that. It is now possible to specify the deadline before auto-restart for update installation. In this post, we will learn about it.
On Windows 10, when new quality or feature updates are available, they download and install automatically, and then you'll receive a notification to schedule a restart as necessary.
However, if you're among those users who are constantly pausing and rescheduling updates, starting with the May 2019 Update (version 1903), Windows 10 is adding advanced settings that allow you to set the number of days before maintenance updates and feature updates are installed automatically. In addition, you'll even find a new option to specified when your device should restart to apply the new changes automatically.
Microsoft has made it easier for Windows Update to keep Windows 10 updated by automatically downloading and installing the latest features and improvements, drivers, and hotfixes released by Microsoft—and with fewer interruptions and restarts when you're using your PC the most. The latest updates will automatically download and install when they’re available. (Unless you’re on a metered connection, then updates won’t download until you manually check for updates.)
After an update is installed, Windows 10 attempts automatic restart outside of active hours. If the restart does not succeed after the deadline of 7 days (by default), the user will see a warning notification that restart is required.
If you like, you can use the Specify deadline before auto-restart for update installation policy to specify the deadline in days before automatically executing a scheduled restart outside of active hours. The deadline can be set from the default 7 days to a number between 2 and 30 days from the time the restart is scheduled.
The only caveat is that you can only postpone a restart for up to seven days, and it's a manual process that you have to do every time a new update becomes available. However, if you find yourself rescheduling a deadline on every update, it's possible to configure a policy in Group Policy or modify the Registry to specify a new default deadline (up to 14 days) that Windows 10 will use to restart your device automatically.
This tutorial will apply for computers, laptops, desktops, and tablets running the Windows 10 operating system (Home, Professional, Enterprise, Education) from all supported hardware manufactures, like Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Toshiba,Lenovo, and Samsung).
