How to stay safe as the number of #covid-19 cases from the #delta #variant rises
The world is at an unprecedented point in the #pandemic,
with just under half of the population fully #vaccinated,
#health and #safety restrictions looser than they have been in 18 months,
and new coronavirus infections on the rise again after months of decline.
The message from public health experts and officials is unequivocal as the delta variant spreads:
Vaccines provide the best defense against serious illness and hospitalization.
Unvaccinated people account for more than 97 percent of new #hospitalizations caused by the delta variant.
Despite the fact that the delta variant is more infectious than the original variant that emerged in
In the #United #States last year, health experts say there are precautions
that can help both vaccinated and unvaccinated people reduce their risk.
Here’s what to know:
Do I need to wear a mask indoors if I'm fully vaccinated?
“If you have been fully vaccinated for at least two weeks and the people you are spending time with have also been fully vaccinated for at least two weeks,
you can feel relatively safe about not having to mask indoors,” it is safe for fully vaccinated people to spend time indoors with other fully vaccinated people.
Even in crowded indoor settings, the shots have proven to be extremely effective.
That can help protect against getting a mild version of covid-19 as well as protecting those who haven’t yet gotten the vaccine.
Is it safe to go to a large outdoor event, such as a wedding or a concert?
On the risk scale, an outdoor setting for fully vaccinated, masked, and socially isolated people is the safest — but not necessarily the best — party setting.
“This is a respiratory disease,” “If anyone passes through an area where an infected person has been and those molecules with the virus are still hanging in the air, someone can still become infected.”
I've only received my first dose of the vaccine.
Is my defense against the delta variant adequate?
While partial vaccination is preferable to none at all, full vaccination provides the best protection against severe illness caused by the delta variant.
“If you've been putting off getting your second dose, now is the time.
There is no evidence that waiting longer [for the second dose] is harmful.”
My children are too young to receive a vaccine.
How can I keep them safe?
Despite the fact that children have milder cases of covid-19, infections in children follow the trend lines in delta variant hot spots:
More children are infected in states with large outbreaks.
Adults and older siblings can reduce the risk to children who aren't old enough to receive a vaccine by avoiding crowded indoor settings and wearing a mask inside.
We are still concerned about handwashing and masking.
How do I approach loved ones who are still suspicious of the vaccine?
“Ask people specifically what their objections are, and don't interrupt; let them finish.
Then calmly present the facts to them.”
Will restrictions be reinstated if cases continue to rise as a result of the delta variant?
No health expert can predict the future, but most were skeptical of a return to widespread restrictions such as stay-at-home orders and shuttered businesses like those seen in 2020.
The bottom line is that we should have mask mandates indoors,” “There's no reason we shouldn't have mask mandates in public buildings.”
However, it is prudent to continue wearing masks in environments where there may be people who are still susceptible to the virus.
