The Viking village of Berk is frequently attacked by Animals that steal livestock and endanger the villagers. Ash, the 15 year old son of the village chieftain, Homer, is deemed too weak to fight. Instead, he creates mechanical devices under apprenticeship with Percy the Small Engine, the village blacksmith.
