How to Troubleshoot PS5 with Safe Mode Menu (Fix Broken PS5)
How to Access Safe Mode on PS5
Turn Off the Console: Press and hold the power button on the front of the PS5 for about 3 seconds until it shuts down completely. The power indicator will blink a few times then stop.
Enter Safe Mode: Press and hold the power button again. Release it after you hear a second beep—about 7 seconds after the first beep.
Connect Your Controller: Plug your DualSense controller into the PS5 with a USB cable (Bluetooth won’t work in Safe Mode). Press the PS button to activate it.
Safe Mode Menu: You’ll see a list of options on the screen.
Safe Mode Options and How to Use Them for Troubleshooting
Here’s what each option does and when to use it:
Restart PS5: Exits Safe Mode and reboots normally. Try this first if the console is stuck or glitching—it’s the simplest fix.
Change Video Output:
Use this if you’re getting a blank screen or display issues.
Select “Change Resolution” to set it to 480p (a safe default), or tweak “HDCP Mode” if the screen flickers or won’t connect to your TV.
Repair Console Storage:
Fixes storage-related errors (e.g., if the PS5 won’t start or games won’t load).
It doesn’t erase data, so it’s safe to try when you suspect corrupted files.
Update System Software:
If the PS5 is crashing or acting up due to outdated firmware, choose this.
You can update via the internet or a USB drive with the latest software from Sony’s website.
Restore Default Settings:
Resets settings (like display or audio preferences) to factory defaults without deleting games or saves.
Use this for weird performance issues that might stem from custom settings.
Clear Cache and Rebuild Database:
Clear System Software Cache: Removes temporary files that might cause slowdowns or crashes.
Rebuild Database: Reorganizes the storage drive to fix missing game icons or loading errors. Neither wipes your data.
Reset PS5:
The nuclear option—restores the console to factory settings, deleting all data.
Use this only if nothing else works (e.g., persistent crashes or boot loops). Back up your saves to the cloud or USB first if possible.
