In this video Barrie shows some examples of profile shifting. This is changing the nature of your available controls to access things that you couldn't otherwise. For example, shifting the left stick functions over to the right stick by holding down a trigger button.

Those available controls may be as basic as a single button to a conventional joypad to all manner of hybrid mishmash systems.
