Transformers Rise of The Beasts drop into theaters TODAY for Thursday previews, and while the domestic opening weekend is shaping up to be rather soft at around $50-60 Million, the international box office is where these movies make their biggest haul. But even that isn't a drop in the bucket compared to the revenues and profits on Transformers toy sales enjoyed by Hasbro, especially in years where they release a new major motion picture.
Transformers movies are very cost effective advertisements for the massive toy line which grew roughly 2000% (yes, two THOUSAND percent) in net sales back to Hasbro between 2000 and 2009 when the second film, Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen, came out.
It also launched Hasbro Studios which later became eOne Studios whereby Hasbro produces content for theaters and Transformers animated shows to streamers like Netflix. Hasbro has managed to get customers to directly pay for the advertising to sell the toy lines these movies and shows were created from.
It's a rather unique dynamic in the film industry as typically an intellectual property like this is originated for the screen and then hopes to create some merchandise sales from it. Transformers, like GI Joe, are toys FIRST and the movies are made to sell MORE.
Let's dive into the history of this and see exactly how Transformers makes money for Hasbro.
