The game features Hugo, a friendly troll, as the protagonist, who embarks on a journey to rescue his family and friends from the clutches of the evil witch Scylla. To progress in Hugo 2, you'll need to lead Hugo through a series of four adventures, while in Hugo 2 1/2, there are five adventures before confronting Scylla in the witch-endgame called "Lightning." These minigames consists of Ice Cave, Snowboard, Diver, and Forest. In the Game Boy Color version, there's also the Aviator minigame.
The Game Boy Color's limited color palette is well-utilized to create visually appealing and vibrant graphics that stay true to the series' style.
The game has three difficulty levels: Easy, Normal, and Hard. Hugo starts with four lives, and gains an extra life for every 1,000 points collected (500 points on Easy). Hugo's goal: collect as many gold bags as possible on each level. Before each level, see how many gold bags Hugo needs to collect to advance
