Hydra - Water Vehicle Driving Arcade Game by Atari Games 1990 - Mini Gameplay
Hydra is a futuristic water vehicle driving arcade game released in 1990 by Atari Games. In 1991 Domark released conversions for the Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum home computers, while in 1992 Atari also released it for their Lynx handheld console. It is a driving simulator shooter with a three-dimensional third-person view, similar to the previous RoadBlasters and S.T.U.N. Runner by Atari itself.
The player takes on the role of a courier who must deliver several highly classified cargoes, piloting a specially armed water craft called a Hydracraft, which resembles a single-seater motorboat, and battles against terrorist forces along the way. There are a total of 9 missions set in various parts of the world, along waterways or at sea; each mission includes three stages corresponding to three contiguous geographical areas and a final bonus journey.
Driving takes place with a third-person three-dimensional view, from the shoulders of the Hydracraft, at adjustable speed. In the arcade machine you have a four-way tilt stick, with built-in weapon buttons, and gas pedal. You have to follow a fixed route with curves, even in the open sea stages. Along the way you will encounter different types of enemy vessels and aircraft, mines and other surfacing obstacles, which can destroy the Hydracraft in the first hit. To fight enemies you have a basic weapon that fires projectiles forward, taking into account the inclination of the vehicle when turning.
If the Hydracraft is destroyed, the route is resumed with a new one, but the load is lost, which must be recovered a little further on, sometimes eliminating an enemy vehicle that has seized it. It is not necessary to have the cargo to complete the level, but it affects the bonus a lot. Along the way you can also collect many cash bonuses and fuel refills, the latter also being replenished at the end of each stage. Fuel is important as running out of fuel determines defeat and the end of the game; there is otherwise no limit on the number of Hydracraft lost.
The Hydracraft also has, in limited quantities, the boost function, which allows you to fly for a short distance. The vehicle can also be piloted during flight, including altitude adjustment. In addition to avoiding enemies and obstacles, flying can be used to achieve certain airborne bonuses, or as a last resort for movement if you run out of fuel.
At the end of each delivery mission is the Hydradome bonus stage, an enemy-free obstacle course set under a huge dome. Then, before moving on to the next mission, you stop at the shop, where you can spend the accumulated money to buy new weapons such as missiles, machine guns, protective shields. Extra weapons have limited ammo and can be selected by the player while navigating.
