I SCREWED UP ROYALLY & It Sent Me Down The Ultimate RABBIT HOLE! | Professor of Rock
I really screwed up a few weeks ago. I was counting down the greatest songs of 1976 and left out More Than a Feeling, one of the greatest songs in classic rock history. I’ve never messed up like this, but here’s the thing: in any other year, it would easily be the #1 song. But in 1976, it would be competing with Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. So that got me thinking… What is the greatest song in classic rock history? So that set me on a quest for rock immortality. I dug into an elite group of songs that not only ruled radio and soundtracked our lives, but have become the definition of rock itself. For this episode, I’ve assembled the ultimate musical showdown. I’ve got a list of 11 of the most legendary classic rock standards to echo across the airwaves. But the question is, which one deserves to be #1? What song is the GOAT of classic rock? My 11 candidates are special. There’s More Than a Feeling, a song that saved rock from a complete disco takeover. There's Stairway to Heaven, a song that got so big it was banned from being played in guitar shops around the world… And the one that has the greatest note hit by a singer ever. Let’s get ready to rumble… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

So, not long ago, while working on our countdown of the Top 10 Songs of 1976, I made a mistake. But I didn’t realize it until it was too late. I omitted Boston’s More Than a Feeling from the list…The thing is, More Than a Feeling was actually released in September 1976. and peaked at #5 on Christmas Day in 76. So for the ’76 #1, I went with Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. Which was definitely deserving. But I started thinking that either one of these songs could have been #1.
And that started me down a rabbit hole… Ever since, I’ve been trying to figure out the greatest classic rock song of all time. But so far, it’s a question I haven’t been able to answer. There are just too many legendary tracks. The good news is I’ve narrowed it down to 11 songs… But from here, I need your help. On this episode, I’m gonna make the case for each of these songs, examining everything from chart stats to record sales to all time radio play to streaming numbers, to pop cultural impact and their legacy over the last 60 plus years And after I break it all down, I’ll rank them based on all the criteria combind. But I want to know from you which one deserves the title: greatest classic rock song of all time? Okay, since we have a lot to cover… let’s get down to business.
So, having said all that, let’s kick off the competition by making the case for Bohemian Rhapsody. Queen was already a band known for pushing boundaries when they dropped this bombshell in 1975. A Night at the Opera was their most ambitious project yet, boasting a studio budget that reportedly made it the most expensive album ever made at the time. “Bohemian Rhapsody” was released as the LP’s lead single in October 1975, and nobody had ever heard anything like it. A 6-minute epic with no chorus, multi-tracked operatic vocals, and a thunderous hard rock section in the middle… It should’ve been unplayable on radio. And according to Mercury, a lot of people slammed “Bohemian Rhapsody” in the 70s. His response? The song was incomparable. He challenged his critics to “name one group that’s done an operatic single.” A rock opera single that, by the way, went to #1 in the UK and stayed there for 9 weeks. And here in the States, Bohemian Rhapsody.
