Last year, development builds of a cancelled Call of Duty game call Future Warfare leaked online. This game was being made by Neversoft, who would then go on to work alongside Infinity Ward on Call of Duty Ghosts and made their own mode: Extinction.

This mode would have you fighting alien Cryptids throughout the map, completing objectives and destroying hives! This mode was meant to be somewhat of a competitor to the Zombies mode of Treyarch's games and whilst some stuck with it, Extinction ultimately did not captivate players' attention the way Zombies did.

This was likely due to its more linear approach and due to the fact that this was coming off of Black Ops 2's legendary run of Mob of the Dead and Origins (and Buried depending on who you ask). Also the fact that Ghosts was obviously not very well received in the slightest definitely played a part.
