I Am Monster is an idle game from New Zealand-based developer Pik Pok, a fairly prolific purveyor of games on the mobile scene. If you’re a connoisseur of the genre like myself, you may recognize them as the name behind games like Into the Dead, Dungeon, Inc, and a few collaborative efforts with Adult Swim (Adventure Xpress, Robot Unicorn Attack 2) and Dreamworks Pictures (Turbo Fast). So, with such a practiced hand behind it, it’s really no surprise that I Am Monster is as solid of an entry into the mobile storefront as it is.

Though, with such a practiced hand behind it, its flaws are likewise that much more inexcusable.

The premise of the game is simple: your stable of giant, monster movie wannabes trample around the city, district by district, getting stronger so they can continue lowering the property values (and the skyline). Mechanically, it’s a fairly stock-standard idle game, but it’s dolled up in a pretty appealing package. As your monsters stomp, they gain energy; as they gain energy, you spend energy on their “squad stats” – attack, skill (damage), and health. The stronger they get, the more districts they can smash through and the more giant military robots and enemy monsters they can lay low for even better rewards. It’s nothing revolutionary, but it’s a unique use of the idle game template and, ultimately, it works fairly well at its core.
