"I'd like to change my answer..." - Frisbee plays Guess the Div
July 21, 2023. A nice summer day in *current location*. My boyfriend and I were dressed in bright pink and walking into a movie theater, expecting to be there for a while. We bought our tickets online, so we were prepared and made sure to get good seats. The worker checks the tickets, points in the right direction, and then quickly moves on to the next person in line. Shortly after we have our seats, and the movie is starting. Oppenheimer.
I feel like I'm in a weird minority with this movie as I mostly just saw it as a bunch of noise and nothing else. It was the most beautifully acted, beautifully directed, and beautifully effected piece of absolutely nothing I've ever seen in my life. I remember extraordinarily little of what happened in the movie and the more I think about it the less I care. Oppenheimer was not a good person, nor was he compelling in any sense.
A sizable portion of the movie was Death destroyer of worlds man being emo because he saw the joker movie and fight club and related a little too hard.
The movie mostly just reminded me of The Imitation Game except instead of an actual hero that saved millions of lives and was then betrayed and killed by his own country, our lead character in Oppenheimer's most compelling character trait is that sometimes he isn't the worst person in the room.
I will never understand why people think the movie is Oscar worthy in the slightest. I could understand best visual effects or even best acting but overall, I just feel bad for all the work that got absolutely wasted telling this "story".
The movie ended, we left, grabbed my other boyfriend (I'm (the author of this, not the organization itself) polyamorous) and then returned to the same theater just in time for Barbie, a MUCH better film.
Barbie was a shockingly smart movie that talked not just about the problems with patriarchy (as most people tend to place it purely since that is the focus) but as problems with gender roles in culture in general. Beauty standards are extremely damaging towards young women, but they aren't just a thing women face and it's awesome that the movie can highlight that while still being extremely funny and shockingly educational to a younger audience.
The set design and world building are genuinely perfect. The only big flaw I can find with the movie is how bad the trailers are and how it can get a little preachy in the latter half. Even in its preachiness though, it continues to be funny at the same time.
Of the summer, Barbie and Spider-Verse are my 2 favorite movies. Oppenheimer being one of my least favorite as I spent most of it thinking about how much better the Badminton Carrotstick movie about the same exact time and general vibe was (Imitation Game).
