In the past 20 years, software has become increasingly important for the successful operation of any kind of business. This trend is expected to continue in the future. At the same time, the amount of open source technologies used in the software industry has increased rapidly.
While closed software development can be considered daily business, active participation in open source communities still poses quite some challenges for companies coming from more traditional industry sectors like automotive and manufacturing.

Bosch has already been using a lot of open source software for a long time. However, we always had our problems with playing a more active role in the community because of all sorts of concerns starting with potential legal issues (We'll get sued!), concerns regarding slow down of development and last but not least questions of product quality. Nevertheless, some three years ago we started to significantly increase our efforts around open source and have since then started new Eclipse projects in some of Bosch's key areas of interest like Internet of Things, development tools, automotive, embedded devices, cloud, containers and open source management.

Having been involved in our open source activities from the beginning, Steffen and Kai will tell the audience about

Bosch's motivation for the approach taken,
the framework we set up to ensure that our developers can safely contribute to open source projects,
the challenges we experienced when developers used to working on closed source started working on open source,
the impact that (active) open source contribution has on product development processes, marketing & sales activities, conducting business and,
last but not least, personal well-being of developers.
