"I'm LOCKED IN!" - highfive plays Guess the Div
Edited by: Lupin
They say never to judge a book by its cover but baby... I'm a big fan of book covers... Or in this case movie covers.
In 1986 the movie Cat City was released in Hungary. It was only in Hungarian and despite being extremely influential in Hungary, didn't seem to make as much of a cultural impact in the US. Until today............
A company I really enjoy, Vinegar Syndrome (not sponsored, just a fan), recently had a remastered copy of the movie on sale and I bought it without even looking at the details and purely judging it by the cover. Once I got my new display piece I popped it into my blu-ray player and hit play.
Let's talk about class structures.
In Cat City, the city is run by a criminal gang (similar to a mafia but they use the word gang) of Cats, below them on the class ladder is the Mice. Pretty easy world to build so far and it's really easy to make comparisons to something like An American Tale and it's sequel. However, the thing that sticks out about Cat City isn't the way it shows an oppressive class but the way it shows strict hierarchies withing a specific class.
The main cat we interact with is named Teufel, he is a higher up at the cat gang. Teufel is constantly berating his assistant then turning it around and forcing his assistant to say how great he is. It's actual abuse... In quite a lot of ways. There's even multiple scenes where Teufel asks his assistant where he got the injuries that Teufel gave him. After being asked, the assistant lies every single time and claims he hurt himself shaving. Everything here is also seen in real life abusive relationships.
Teufel is not the head of the organization however, that would be a cat named Gatto (a bit on the nose tbh). Gatto is on the phone with Teufel a few times throughout the film and every single time Gatto berates and threatens Teufel. In this case, we get to see how incredibly stressed it makes Teufel. At one point, after a call ends, Teufel is shown taking anxiety medication in order to stop a panic attack. The cycle of abuse begins... but that's not where it ends.
The assistant isn't the lowest on the social ladder... One day he comes home from work and finds that his daughter has become friends with a mouse. As a result of this social disturbance, the assistant calls all mice "dirty" and then denies his daughter dinner. Another real world abuse tactic shown in this "kids" movie.
The cat's are constantly fighting for their place in society above the mice and also within themselves. Hierarchy, status and class appear to be the most important things in all of cat society.
In contrast, the mice all seem classless... or at least they don't go into depth of the class system of the mice. Outside of some "pro-cat" mice, they all seem rather united in fear. The oppression by the cats brought the mice together in a way that the cats can't ever understand. Oppression is the cat way of life and it appears to be all they know how to do.
The rest of the movie is a silly romp about trying to stop a secret agent from getting plans for a weapon. Highly recommend this movie if you can manage to find it anywhere... Minus the few extremely "gross" scenes with the vampire bats.
