This might be a very hipster sounding essay but I'm going for it anyway.

Okay so, there's a British rapper named Ren who has recently somewhat blown up in popularity after the recent release of the song "Hi Ren" and his most recent album being a big hit in the UK. I've been a fan of Ren for years, originally finding him when "Money Game Part 2" became a meme song for a bit. I have loved almost everything this man has done... except for like half of the songs on the new album.

To break it down lets start with the blatant stuff first and go from there. The album is poorly constructed. The saddest song on the entire album, a song about the loss of his friend, is directly sitting between two brag raps about how talented he is. It's incredibly jarring to listen to if you want to put on the album and just play it through. I think this is one of the most blatant issues and not much to cover so lets dig deeper into the individual songs.

Down on the Beat is his worst song, competing closely with Lost All Faith (I can see what it's trying to do but it falls flat), Masochist (a song that completely misunderstands what Masochist means.) and Loco (one specific part of this song lowers its status a lot). "Money Game Part 3", the sequel to the reason I fell in love with Ren in the first place, feels like an extremely preachy and misguided attempt to pull a British "This is America".

Of course not all of the music is bad, the sad one mentioned earlier that i will not name for YouTube reasons and Uninvited are both masterpieces in my opinion. I really like the way that Sick Boi, the song the album is named after, tells a story and incorporates the way its being rapped into its story.

Honestly I don't know how to feel about the album as a whole. It was obviously very popular and helped Ren become a much larger name than he was before and I'm proud of him as a person, especially after watching him grow for so long. Ultimately though, I was rather disappointed. Too many songs felt like they were added to hit a quota when the thing I loved about Ren was his attention to detail and intensive storytelling.
