Will Smith meets Vengeance.

In other news, I finally experienced The Batman.

Quite enjoyed it.

Robert Pattinson's Batman is only two years on the job and those details (particularly the botched landings) emphasise how inexperienced he is in the vigilante game.

The dude can brawl like a champ. That brutal subway scene is reminiscent of the Bat's ballet performances in the Arkham Asylum video game series – I wanted more of that.

But it's not all about the visceral, kinetic action ...

His detective work had Gotham City Police Department following him around a crime scene to collect clues and decipher the grisly puzzles left behind by the Riddler.

We get it, this Batman is competent. What's missing, though, is his training journey. Aside from a few lines from Sméagol, I mean Alfred, he's just a brooding young man looking to clean up his city one thug at a time.

Take it away Nirvana: Something in the way ... Mmm-mmm.

Which brings me to Paul Dano's incredible Riddler persona. This guy evokes Mindhunter-like serial killer villainy and everything about it was brilliant.

The other antagonist, supplier of bad things, Penguin, brought loads of comic relief. That's not to say he hammed it up (Colin Farrell is barely recognisable under the makeup). Another outstanding performance.

Falcone (John Turturro) and Jeffrey Wright (James Gordon) stood out in the best way. Those guys rock and prove that a nuanced approach aligned perfectly with the tone of the film.

The introduction of Selina Kyle (Zoë Kravitz) and her place in the plot worked well. Happy to report she was great.

Overall, a solid cast and a fine entry for the franchise.

Bring on the sequel.

Plenty of opportunities for character growth especially with Bruce Wayne's philanthropy or current lack thereof.

Here comes the inevitable comparison.

Nolan's Batman Begins is the superior movie though.
