I’m really glad that this game exists. It was a brave gamble by EA to release a triple-A single player game with a new IP. Unfortunately, it didn’t make a big impact, but I hope it hasn’t put them off and they go for reusing the old and tired formulas.
This game is heavily story driven, and has gameplay akin to Doom Eternal but with magic instead of guns. There is also a bit of Metroid thrown in as you are able to backtrack through the game to find secrets, but I went through the game in a linear fashion because I wanted to get through as quick as possible. That doesn’t mean I didn’t like the game; I just have a lot to get through.
The battles are intense and there are an overwhelming number of abilities you are given at the start of the game, which I would have preferred that they spaced out a bit more to give a chance for me to get more acquainted. It would be easy to forget an ability when you have so much choice in such close succession.
You have three weapon types (magic in different colours) to use and you can find or craft new weapons for each type, but I found them to be pretty pointless. Once I found something that I liked, I stuck to it. The blue magic can either be useless or a powerful sniper rifle, so I kept with that. The red magic was a powerful shotgun type so that is useful. The green magic is like an underpowered machine gun so I hardly used this.
The abilities aren’t that great either. There is a hook shot which is great for traversal but you are supposed to use it on enemies but it wasn’t worth using. There is a time stop one which is more useful for rotating platforms rather than slowing enemies. You also have a laser that is useful for unlocking puzzles and I’m not sure what it does to the enemies.
There are special moves as well that use up mana energy. But I never ran out of mana energy because I didn’t use them much. There are 3 main ones but I only really used 1 because the others were weak.
Now that I’m writing about all the weapons and abilities, I’m realising that the half of the them were useless for me.
The game can get really tricky in some battle scenarios. Some boss fights take you by surprise too. The difficulty is very shaky. I played through on the easiest setting but I still had a few moments where I struggled.
The graphics are stunning and the environments are beautiful, but it does suffer from “too many graphics”. Sometimes you can’t see the enemies because you are flashing so much light and particle effects from your hand that it gets in the way of your view.
The story is decent, if a bit much to comprehend. I lost my place a few times due to so many names of people and places that you are supposed to keep track of. It’s like the start of game of thrones where you hear all these names but you haven’t had a chance to realise who is who.
You can tell that the developers really tried with this game but it doesn’t quite hit the mark as a top end game. I enjoyed my playthrough and would recommend it, but it’s not a top tier game. Which is fine. They don’t all need to be.
