Coaching against his premiership captain Sam Mitchell for the first time. Dew led his team to its third win in four rounds and. in the process. silenced the noise around his 2008 premiership coach Alastair Clarkson potentially taking his job in 2023. Fremantle and Collingwood in their past four weeks. and will face North Melbourne next week before their bye. giving them the chance to square their win loss record at 6 6 and stay in touch with the top eight. The victory saw them move a game clear of the Hawks. who beat the Lions last week. but have lost five of their past six matches. Their night got worse when running defender Jarman Impey was reported for kneeing Ben Ainsworth and Sam Frost was reported for rough conduct on Brandon Ellis. The Hawks had few answers for the Suns in the first half. who led by as much as 47 points late in the second term. Playing at ‘home’ in Darwin. the Suns took 10 marks inside their forward 50 in the first half. and arguably should have led by more than 41 points at the main break. after some simple set shots went missing. It didn’t prove too damaging. however. as the Suns continued their dominance in the second half. Mabior Chol only had nine touches for the match but kicked three goals to continue his incredible debut season at the Suns. while his former Richmond teammate Ellis was the Suns’ most prolific with 24 touches. six tackles and two goals. From the very start. the Suns were on top early. They racked up 12 of the first 16 inside 50s to race out to a three goal lead before Luke Breust got the Hawks’ first. after the visitors moved the ball aggressively through the corridor. But it was one of the few clean passages of play for the Hawks. who were out tackled by 19 and smashed in the contested possessions by 33. The Suns also recorded 17 more inside 50s and 11 more clearances. Most disappointing were the Hawks’ turnovers. They had 47 in the first half. which tracked well above their season average of 69 a match before Saturday night. Jarrod Witts dominated in the ruck for the Suns. who had 40 hitouts to the Hawks’ eight. and Touk Miller was the biggest benefactor. amassing 24 touches. six clearances and a goal. Izak Rankine didn’t have a lot of the ball. but had five score involvements from his first seven touches. showing the class that justified his selection at pick three in the 2018 draft. Former Saint Lachie Weller also had a sharp night for the Suns with a team high 27 disposals. Jack Scrimshaw was subbed out of the Hawks side with concussion early in the third term.
