In memory of *={dGr8LookinSparky [Tremulous 1.3]
Sparky recently passed away (28 september 2022) due to cancer. Today we had a memorial game pm Sparky's Unitremia server (test7341) and cron prepared a speech for us. Unfortunately I had to leave at the end, but I got most of it I think.
Unitremia (stylised as ^4U^5^7i^5tren^1i^6a), formally test7341 which tested a special branch of GrangerHub's projects called swirl, which mixes in new gameplay elements and keeps some elements from both 1.1 and 1.2 GPP styles. The reason why its dubbed 1.3 is because the code base for this project was using the unreleased 1.2 GPP code which runs on an incompatible, protocol 71, but with /dev/humancontroller's aid, like DerBunker later, GH got multiprotocol support.
GH was started by a group of tremulous players, some from the 1.2 GPP community, some from the 1.1 community, which includes users such as myself which formally attended acidtu.be, and sparky had ambitions to create and host the four new flavours of tremulous - Chocolate (GPP), Strawberry (new game mode), Swirl (primarily a mix between 1.1 and GPP) and Vanilla (1.1) alongside a web series project which never took off - which is why I have a music album named as such - https://soundcloud.com/zdrytchx/sets/acidtu-be-webseries
Sparky was one of the most active members out of the co-founders and administrators of the GH community. I don't think I've ever heard his voice because he wasn't keen on using Discord (he preferred Slack and IRC/Matrix), and I might never be able to now. He was a carpenter and wanted to make me something, which I initially envisioned as a more user friendly music stand of sorts, of which I did draw up rough blueprints before using DAW MicroStation 95, but never publicly published.
He was a very friendly and outgoing member of the community, and had a lot of good, questionable and sometimes undesirable ideas about where tremulous should head, and I remember telling him how unrealistic or ridiculous some of these goals are. Nevertheless, he pushed to learn QuakeC and get into modding tremulous and successfully did so past and beyond my scripting experience, and at the end he probably knew the code base better than I did. Weather or not they would come to fruition and met by bad press with rivalry from Zittrig's DerBunker community, they pushed on and were active right until about 2019-2020, after which tremulous' community became no longer active 24/7.
He kept his illness to himself, and because he disappeared a while back in 2021, cron panicked and thought he had died and had informed the top GH admins only. When I asked sparky about it, he simply said that he had internet issues or something along those lines.
Cron is perhaps the closest one to sparky as they spent many hours working together on GH's projects, and as a fellow co-founder of GH, he prepared a speech for us in this video and he is the one most deeply affected by this loss.
Because the server is owned and paid for by Sparky, it is unknown when the server will go offline, so we held our memorial game on his server.
If for whatever reason the tremulous masterlist goes offline, you can check it out using /connnect IP:Port
