Phantom Abyss plays like a modern Indiana Jones movie without crystal skulls and poor acting. It’s all about dodging traps, parkour running and avoiding the wrath of ancient guardians, while the phantoms of previous players are dying all around you. Devolver Digital sniffed out another treasure, this time by indie dev Team Wiby.
Phantom Abyss is a massive asynchronous multiplayer game that casts players into procedurally generated temples and tasks them with retrieving the sacred relics hidden within deadly chambers. And deadly it is, geez. I’m constantly dying, from the most ridiculous situations. It’s my bad for sure, but holy moly people, this game. It’s far from a walk in the parkour.
You’re pretty much Indiana jones in first person, with your whip, seeking treasures. You’re dropped in a procedurally generated temple, together with these phantoms. Not sure you’ve ever played racing games, but there you used to have ghosts, indicating the fastest lap. You could follow that ghost, take corners the same way, just in order to attempt and improve the fastest laps. These phantoms are like that. They’re other players that attempted the parkour, and failed. They’re dead. And they’re here, so you can learn from their mistakes.
This cute indie game gives you just one shot though, one opportunity. You need to make it happen. Get that relic. Don’t get sliced, don’t get crushed, don’t get burned, don’t fall, don’t hesitate, in short, don’t die. Or you will end up as a phantom, only to be a warning sign for the next soul about to meet his maker.
