Indie Games With Mabi !! - Red Rogue (Skeleton BFFs EVERYWHERE!)
Thanks for checking out my videos!! This is Indie Games With Mabi, where I check out the best (or worst) indie games I could find!! If you have any suggestions on which indie games I should play through next let me know in the comments below!!
=========================
-Where can I get this particular game?-
http://gamejolt.com/games/rpg/red-rogue/11003/
==== Game Description ====
"Descend into the Dungeon of Chaos, retrieve the Amulet of Yendor, kill all who stand in your way and return with your prize."
"Shouldn't there be more places in colour like the Overworld?
I will answer with the comment that preceeds the function createOverworld() in the code for this game:
/* Create the overworld
*
* The overworld is present to create a contrast with the dungeon. It is in colour and so
* are you. There is a health stone for restoring health and a grindstone -
* an allegory of improving yourself in the real world as opposed to a fantasy where
* you kill people to better yourself
*/
Don't you think you should make a game that everyone likes instead of just you?
That's my day job. But I got vastly better at it whilst making Red Rogue. Follow Michael Jackson's advice sometime and start with the man in the mirror. Although actually, M.J. didn't write that, Siedah Garrett did. The former was a bit of a nut-job regardless of his ability to sing and dance.
Wait a minute, is this set in the same universe as the original Rogue?
Yes. It's an unofficial sequel. It wasn't originally, I just wanted to make my own role-playing-game and put all the sorts of things I like in there. Especially if everyone else hated them. Then the minion stopped being an optional companion and I started to think about the relationship between the heroine and her side-kick...
I remember a Steam Greenlight page for this, what happened to it?
I only like doing marketing when I'm paid to do it.
Have you made any other games?
Lots. Mostly for Nitrome Ltd. There's a list of all the games I've made for them here.
What else do you do?
I make art. An example.
Where are the cheat codes? I must have my codes...
The game supports the Konami Code (limited tries), and a debugging mode. Activate debugging mode by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Enter during a level. In the debug menu are sandbox tools for examining mechanics. Rendering the AI you may find interesting as well as some of the items and races. There are very basic level editing tools which require rebooting the AI (dungeon navigation is pre-processed for run-time speed).
Is there a wiki?
No. If you're one of those nutters who likes writing wikis then you have my blessing to set up a Red Rogue wiki. You can verify your facts in the source code. There's also the dev-log for the story of the development.
Can I make Red Rogue 2 / [Red Hack] / port it to [insert language]?
If it's an open-source venture go for it. Otherwise contact me at st3ed[at]hotmail[dot]com and we'll talk about it more in detail.
Don't you think you should add this feature I thought of?
I am not like other roguelike developers. I made this project with one thing in mind - to finish it. The very act of stopping work on this project was wholly important in closing one chapter in my life and moving on to a new one.
But it's a really simple feature!
If it is a small change that would make playing the game a smoother experience then I will consider it for a patch in the future. But such patches will not be my priority
An error console appeared with some text in it, what do I do?
That text is telling you the exact location of a problem in the code. Copy the text in the console and send it to st3ed[at]hotmail[dot]com. Thanks in advance.
I found a bug, but no error console appeared
Can you get it to happen again? Can you tell me what to do to see the bug myself? This is the most important step in bug fixing - without it it's unlikely I will ever be able to figure out how to solve the bug, I'm deadly serious. Taking a screenshot will help - there's an option for that in the menu. Also there is a menu option called set rng seed. If you write down the number next to that option then that may allow me to reproduce the issue you're seeing. You can then tweet to @st33d or email me at st3ed[at]hotmail[dot]com.
