Indivisible Prototype - Ajna Dies at the End
'Indivisible Prototype' isn't actually the name of the game. It's actually a prototype of a game called 'Indivisible'. Just... you know... getting that straight right off.
I'm always down for beta testing new games. Usually you have to jump through a few hoops to do so, but this one is freely available on the PSN for everyone to try. If you have a PS4, I'd definitely recommend it.
The hand-drawn art style is always great when it's done well and it's done fantastically here. The first time I started the game, Ajna girded her loins and just stood there waiting for me to move because I didn't realise I was SUPPOSED to start controlling her yet. The music is also a joy to listen to... I'll have to hunt down the soundtrack when it's available.
The battle system reminds me a lot of Valkyrie Profile, with each team member attacking based on an assigned button. It threw me off occasionally, though, as the buttons will change depending on which side you approach the enemy. Ajna will always be in front, so if you approach from the left, she'll have the O button. If you approach from the right, she'll be the [ ] button and you'll have to switch up your muscle memory.
The battles are sufficiently well-paced and fun to watch as they unfold. Fortunately, you don't have four people running around with you as you platform your way through levels. Most of the time, you just control Ajna with your compatriots folding out from behind her when the battle starts.
The platforming itself is pretty satisfying, with the axe being used not only to clear vines but also to gain purchase for higher jumps. The jumping itself feels a tad sloppy, though. It felt like there were too many errors that were due to Ajna's loose control. I've no Idea if this is a bug or feature, but as it's a Prototype I can see it being tightened up in the future. Hopefully a 'ledge grab' will be added as well.
This clip ends rather suddenly with Ajna's HP getting down to 0... I'm not a fan of games that don't give you the chance to revive the leader, especially with magic-slinger (and sass-mouth) Razmi right there, but I can respect it as a design choice. I'll just have to safeguard her a little more carefully in future playthroughs.
All in all, I'd definitely recommend this. It's an enjoyable and pretty platformer that I can only see improving on its fairly stable formula. Good luck as you continue, Lab Zero!
