An improvement of 5 blocks from my previous solution (and it only took me several years.) The key to it was moving the walls one space further to the right before welding on the beds. Suddenly it became possible to position the kitchen counters without using so many extraneous blocks and without them getting stuck in a doorway.

Better yet, I still got to keep my ridiculous inverse tower of walls.
