Inscryption - Game Review
Inscryption is actually a deck building horror game, and it's absolutely incredible. This is not a game you want to be spoiled for.
We play as Luke Carder (Kevin Saxby), an enthusiastic card gamer and content creator. Luke comes into possession of a mysterious unrecognizable game called Inscryption. Luke plays the game and there is clearly something evil about it. In the game itself there are three separate card games with their own unique mechanics and boss fights, each sharing the same characters as each utmost notably the four Scrybes, who are sort of the Gods of this universe.
Inscryption is a mind blowing experience to be honest. The story is crafted with such love and it's genuinely really interesting every single moment you are playing. The mechanics are surprisingly well put together despite the primary focus being it's captivating mystery. The horror elements are also unexpected considering it's a deck building game, but they are effective and the art and visuals, and the overall eeriness of the situations you find yourself in make it a great horror experience too.
The characters were very memorable and I especially liked the talking cards who would react to your decisions. The premise is strong and would inspire others like it in the future, such as the Netflix film "Choose or Die" (2022). I would have been satisfied with just the first act of the game, but it goes the extra mile and creates full on entirely different games to play afterwards. My only criticisms are how busted and game breaking Ouroboros is (Although this was definitely intended, but I still don't like it), and the cringey acting from Kevin Saxby which kind of killed the tension and atmosphere the game was establishing.
Inscryption is a must play even if you don't personally fancy deck building card games. There is a myriad of secrets to be found here and the lore is clearly very in-depth and intriguing.
