4This ending can only be found after completing the game and finding and unlocking all 14 of the Secret Orbs.
Once you have collected all of the Orbs, load up Chapter 07 with the corn field. Proceed into the corn field and access the hidden bunker where you found the second Secret Orb. This time around, at the base of the ladder move to the right and you should find a small control panel in front of a locked circular door. We'll need to interact with the console here (pulling the switch in one of three directions makes an ominous musical cue) and input a code in order to unlock the door. The code is:
Up, Up, Right, Left, Right, Right, Right, Up, Up, Up, Right, Left, Left, Left
If this noise sounds familiar, it’s probably because you’ve already heard it elsewhere in key places in the game, like where the fifth collectible orb is in an alley below the city rooftops. A weird audio recording device is playing a series of notes in a loop, which you need to copy down and replay at the bunker.
A metafictional interpretation of the game secret ending is based on the notion of player agency. Matulef summarizes this theory as "the boy is being controlled by a renegade force represented by the player".
The act of pulling the plug in the final area is similar to the concept of The Matrix, as described by PC Gamer's Tim Clark.
Matulef explains that the location of the alternate ending is only known to the player with knowledge of the main ending and not to the Huddle or the scientists. With knowledge of the game's true ending, achieving the alternate ending is to reach a conclusion to the game that "ostensibly puts an end to the boy, the blob, and any inhumane experiments being conducted".
