Download the AM2R launcher onto your computer. I won't post direct links, but it you google "AM2RLauncher 2.2.0 Win + Android + XBOX" the first link will take you to Internet Archive where you can download the launcher. That's the one I used

Unzip the file once you download it onto your computer. That folder (named AM2RLauncher_2.2.0_win or something like that) will be where the entire game will be stored, so it'll be easy to transfer in one package.

Run the launcher in the folder (AM2RLauncher.exe). It'll download some stuff into the folder and update the game automatically.

Once a window that looks like this pops up, everything will be ready to be transferred.

Put your Deck into Desktop Mode. Using Warpinator or a USB flashdrive, transfer the entire AM2RLauncher folder from your computer onto your Deck. For simplicity's sake, you can just put it in the Deck's desktop, but I put it into my SD card

Once the folder is in your Deck, go into the Profiles subfolder, then Community Updates. You'll see, among other files, an exe called AM2R.exe.

Open up Steam, go to the lower left corner, click Add a Game, then Add a non-Steam game, then Browse. From that window, go to the exe from Step 6, then Open. You'll now have AM2R added to Steam, and can be directly played in Gaming Mode

Set the exe's compatibility to Proton Experimental.
