Intel i7-4790K & i5-4690K in 2020: Benchmarks vs. Ryzen 3600, 9700K
9,031The Intel i7-4790K and i5-4690K CPUs were leaders of their era, but it's been long enough that owners might be looking to upgrade to modern Intel i7/i9 CPUs or AMD R5/R7 CPUs.

In this video, we'll be revisiting the Intel Core i7-4790K and Core i5-4690K. Back when we reviewed the 4690K, we were still in the era when "an i5 was enough for gaming," but things have changed. We're not recommending i5s at present -- at least, not the current Intel iteration of them -- and the R5 series has usurped that price category from Intel. Intel is left mostly with the i7-9700K and i9-9900K, although for anyone on an i5-4690K, there is an alternative 'upgrade' path to the 4790K (if one can be found for dirt cheap). As a reminder, this information also applies to owners of the Intel i7-4770K and i5-4670K.
Our benchmarks look at just about everything today, including the AMD R5 3600, 3600X, R7 3700X, R7 3800X, Intel i5-9600K, i7-9700K, and i9-9900K, and over a dozen other CPU line items. We've removed HEDT CPUs from these charts since they aren't in the right price category, but you can find them in our recent Intel Xeon W-3175X revisit.
