The Kid Icarus series, known in Japan as Hikari Shinwa (光神話, literally Mythology of Light) is a video game franchise published by Nintendo. The games take place in a fantasy world based on ancient times and Greek mythology. The gameplay is a mix of action, adventure and platforming.

The first Kid Icarus game, released in 1986 for the Famicom Disk System (1987 for the Nintendo Entertainment System), was well received by critics, despite low sales. A sequel entitled Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters was released in 1991 on Game Boy. On June 15, 2010, during its E3 conference, Nintendo announced Kid Icarus: Uprising for the Nintendo 3DS, a relaunch of the franchise after 19 years of absence. The game was released in March 2012.

After the commercial success of its platform games in the 1980s (Donkey Kong (1981), Ice Climber (1985), and Super Mario Bros (1985), as well as the highly acclaimed adventure game The Legend of Zelda ( 1986)), Nintendo wants to try a different genre. Programmers begin work on the action game Metroid, released for the Famicom Disk System on August 6, 1986 and Nintendo Entertainment System the following year. Kid Icarus is developed at the same time as Metroid, of which it shares the programmers and the producer: Gunpei Yokoi, who has already produced Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr. (1982) and Mario Bros (1983). The music is composed by Hirokazu Tanaka, who also composed the music for the game Duck Hunt (1984).
