In my notes about this episode I wrote that Rex’s death is a great subversion. Of course I wasnt aware at the time that he went to the last of us part 2 school of being shot in the head. In spite of this, the subversion is still mostly true. There are endless examples of Saturday morning cartoons that end an episode or cut to commercial at the pivotal moment of action - the heroes life in peril. And that’s part of the reason why this; (show rex’s headshot but with a goofy sound effect or something) is so effective. We have been programmed to expect the deus ex machina. The invincible writers essentially weaponised two decades of cliched writing against us and I am here for it. Whats even crazier is that the bastard then stands up and and starts shanking lizard man with the shard of bone sticking out of his wrist. From beginning to end this sequence had my jaw on the floor and I think the ability to surprise you is something most cartoons lack.
