iOS 18 Introduces RCS: Apple's Limited Take on Modern Messaging
During Apple's WWDC 2024, Craig Federighi briefly mentioned the inclusion of RCS support in iOS 18. While the announcement was subtle, it signifies a major shift for Apple, which has resisted adopting the modern messaging standard for years. RCS, or Rich Communication Services, promises features like read receipts and easier file sharing. However, Apple’s version appears to be basic and lacks the end-to-end encryption between iPhone and Android devices that Google Messages offers. This move seems like a minimal compliance with regulatory pressures rather than a full embrace of RCS.
For those unfamiliar, Apple’s reluctance to adopt RCS stems from its desire to keep iMessage exclusive to iPhone users. The walled garden approach maintains a distinct user experience but at the cost of cross-platform messaging enhancements. Despite this, the inclusion of RCS in iOS 18 marks a significant, albeit cautious, step forward.
As iOS 18 is still months away from its final release, it’s possible that Apple may enhance its RCS implementation. For now, though, it looks like Apple is sticking to its minimalist approach.
