iOS 18 Unveiled: Apple Intelligence, Customization Galore, and ChatGPT Integration
At its Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple unveiled iOS 18, the next iteration of its iPhone operating system, set to arrive this fall. The highlight was the introduction of Apple Intelligence, the company's AI push powered by the A17 and M-series chips. This personalized AI assistant helps prioritize notifications, offers writing tools for rewriting, proofreading, and summarizing text, and provides Smart Reply suggestions in Mail.
Apple emphasized that its AI is "grounded in personal information and context," ensuring privacy through on-device processing. Additionally, Apple Intelligence allows users to create images based on conversations, generate AI emoji (Genmoji), and erase unwanted objects from photos using the Clean Up tool.
Notably, iOS 18 features integration with ChatGPT from OpenAI, accessible through Siri and the systemwide writing tools. Users can sign in with their premium ChatGPT subscriptions for added features, although the rollout may come later this year.
Beyond AI, iOS 18 brings unprecedented customization options. Users can personalize their home screens, app icon colors, and Control Center with multiple pages and third-party app controls. App locking, contact visibility control, and a new Passwords app enhance security and privacy.
Other notable features include tapbacks with emoji or stickers in Messages, scheduled messages, text formatting, and RCS support. The Mail app gains on-device categorization and digests, while Maps introduces topographic maps and offline hiking routes. Game Mode optimizes performance during play sessions, and Photos receives a major redesign with collections and face sorting.
