Was this the coolest mechanic in any fighting game?

In Tatsunoko vs Capcom: Ultimate All Stars, the key mechanic that defined the game was Baroque.

Baroque is a mechanic that allows you to cancel your attacks at the cost of whatever red health your character had. After becoming a glowing rainbow, the rest of your combo will do extra damage based on how much red health you had, and you gain an extra jump and air dash.

By being tied to your red health, Baroque was a really interesting mechanic you could use as an all-in comeback mechanic, you could use slivers of red health to ensure your attacks were safe on block, pull off mixups, or even hit some nasty unblockables.

With its versatility and other mechanics in the game like Mega Crash, the game’s version of Burst meant to counter Baroque, Tatsunoko vs Campcom had tons of ways to approach and mixup your opponent, and it remains one of the most underappreciated crossover fighters in Capcom’s library of games.
