Is this something new from iOS/Apple?

I was not expecting this.

Another iPhone had come in with a smashed screen and _completely_ disabled (no "Try again in 15 minutes"). I plugged it in to iTunes after I'd replaced the screen in preparation to factory restore it, but was given the option to try a recovery - in the past this hasn't ever worked, *this time* it did something different.

Pass code had to be put in again 3 different times, and it took about half and hour before it finished the recovery.
