The city of Olympia, as well as cities all over the United States, have ordinances that make it illegal to sit, lie, or camp on city property. These ordinances target homeless populations, giving police the ability to harass or arrest the most vulnerable members of the community just for resting, a basic human need. They are tantamount to making it illegal to be too poor to afford housing.

Not only are these laws obviously classist, in addition to showing a clear bias against the poor and unfortunate, they are unconstitutional. A recent ruling in the 9th circuit court (Martin vs city of boise) says that the government cannot criminalize indigent, homeless people for sleeping outdoors, on public property, on the false premise they had a choice in the matter. The official ruling is that ordinances that ban camping constitute cruel an unusual punishment under the 8th amendment.

Multiple businesses in the Olympia Downtown Association (the ODA) have hired private security (Pacific Coast Security) to roust homeless sleeping in doorways of any business that opted into the contract. These businesses treat homeless as pests without any respect for their rights or property. Whether it's private security or the police, forcing homeless to wake up and move in the middle of the night, without any legal place to go, is cruel and unusual punishment.

Legalize survival.
