Jade Empire: Special Edition - PC - Character Selection and Tutorial (Blind, Grand Master)
The character selection and tutorial for Jade Empire: Special Edition on PC. I went for Monk Zeng, the closest this game has to a mage. I normally go for magic based characters with ranged offensive magic although that ended up being not so great in this game, too many enemies are immune to it. When I came to that realisation I had to adapt my build and playstyle on the fly, which actually made this playthrough fun and challenging (VERY challenging in places). Chi, this game's version of mana doesn't recharge either, and is also used for healing and damage boosts, making it a precious commodity.
Anyway this series will be a full blind playthrough on Grand Master difficulty with most if not all the side quests completed. Grand Master is the highest difficulty you can play on a new game, though a higher Jade Master difficulty is unlocked upon beating it. I'm a good guy so I went almost exclusively open palm, which is the "light" side of this game's morality system. The game also has a shmup mini game which I dabbled with but not too often, I'm not too into shmups, though the times I did were also on Grand Master.
Some info on the game. This was developed by Bioware and originally released as an Xbox exclusive in 2005. It was ported to PC as the "Special Edition" in 2007 with some extra bells and whistles, including two previously limited edition characters, Monk Zeng being one of them. It's a slight departure for Bioware in both setting and gameplay, taking place in a fictional Asian inspired fantasy universe and featuring real time combat. I enjoyed the atmospheric setting and the combat was definitely a challenge on Grand Master, though it wasn't the smoothest and could sometimes feel incredibly cheap. The battles are often fast and furious, unlike the pause based battles from earlier Bioware titles, you do need a certain level of strategic thinking to beat them although spamming moves that work is often key. Other than that it's pretty much what you'd expect from Bioware.
Full disclosure, this is 99.9% Grand Master but was brought down to Master for the first part of one of the arena battles. I'll point that out nearer the time. If you've played this you'll probably know what battle I mean, my build just wasn't up to it on Grand Master though I tried. For what it's worth that's just a side quest and not required to finish the game.
