I brought around 30 hermit crabs home from Jamaica. They are not shy at all and they are very active. I have watched about 6 or so change shells and although this is not the most impressive one, its the first one I filmed. The larger crab in the background with the spikey shell just adopted its shell within 30 minutes of me placing the shell in the crabitat. Its old shell was snatched up about 1 minute later, and this is the 3rd shell exchange resulting from introducing only 1 shell. Each time a shell is swapped, it leaves an increasingly smaller shell empty. Picture the largest crab in the background taking the first empty shell, his old shell is then grabbed by a smaller crab, 'its' old shell is then grabbed by even a smaller crab, ect.
