James Cameron's Avatar: The Game is the video game adaptation of James Cameron's film of the same name. The title is developed by Ubisoft Montreal. It was announced by Ubisoft that it will be using the same technology as the film to be displayed in stereoscopic 3D.
The video game is set on Pandora, an alien planet moon featured in the motion picture. The game includes the Na'vi, Pandora's indigenous people and other strange life forms, the player assumes control of a marine named Lance Corporal Able Ryder. Shortly into the game the player is forced to pick a side, RDA or Na'vi. if the player picks RDA they will be unable to use their avatar body again and if they pick Na'vi they cannot use their human body again.
On July 24 2007, it was announced that Ubisoft would be developing Avatar: The Game in conjunction with director James Cameron as he films Avatar. According to Cameron, "For the movie Avatar we are creating a world rich in character, detail, conflict and cultural depth. It has the raw material for a game that the more demanding gamers of today will want to get their hands on - one that is rich in visuals and ideas, and challenging in play." Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, leading roles in the film, do not appear. Sigourney Weaver and Giovanni Ribisi do voice their characters. The game will be a different adaptation of the movie of the same name. The developers had carte blanche from the movie.
On August 27, 2009, MovieScore Magazine reported that composer Chance Thomas had been hired to write the music for Avatar: The Game. It is unclear whether the score will contain some of the musical themes composed by James Horner for the movie.
Avatar: The Game has received mixed reception, with the PC version garnering a metascore of 65 on Metacritic. Many critics criticized the game's linear gameplay, unintuitive controls and camera issues. However, the majority of critics praised the game's graphics and presentation. The Wii version was mixed but more on the mediocre side because of a shoddy camera, frame rate, and bad story, but was praised for its visuals and controls.
On IGN the game received a score of 5.9 for Wii, and 6.8 for the other consoles.
In contrast, the PC version fared much better with a rating of 8.2 out of 10, according to Meant to be Seen (MTBS). The reasoning is that PC stereoscopic 3D displays are more readily available. According to the MTBS reviewer, "In a year or two when S-3D gaming is much more common, I really think Avatar: The Game will be a regularly cited example that demonstrates how things should be done, and what the artistic potential is behind stereoscopic 3D gaming."
