Just as the DCEU is coming to an end with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the plot synopsis and filming details for the debut movie of James Gunn's DCU reboot, Superman: Legacy, have been revealed. Following the financial and critical disappointments of the DCEU's most recent offerings, all eyes are now on the DCU to reinvigorate DC's cinematic presence. The pressure is particularly intense for Superman: Legacy as the new cinematic franchise's first movie to set the standard and enthuse future audiences.
Filming for the newest Superman movie will begin in March 2024, according to reports (via Collider), with the logline being as follows:
"Superman, a cub reporter in Metropolis, embarks on a journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent."
Needless to say, the movie will seemingly tread familiar ground when it comes to depicting Superman's story, though DC Studios co-CEO, Peter Safran, has balked at the notion of it comprising another origin story. Filming will begin several months after the DCEU concludes, meaning there will be a substantial gulf between the two franchises, affording the DC movie space plenty of room to breathe before the reboot attempts to reanimate the franchise.
Superman: Legacy will aim to retell Clark Kent's (David Corenswet) story with a fresh perspective. To this end, some unusual characters are already confirmed to be appearing in the DCU's debut movie, including Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Angela Spica/The Engineer (María Gabriela De Faría), and Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan). These characters will be joined by Superman's iconic rival, Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), with Clark Kent's relationship with the latter forming a central part of the movie's plot.
Suffice it to say, the movie is already stuffed with some pretty exciting characters yet to be brought to live-action movies, which evokes questions about how they will all fit into the plot. As it stands, the synopsis is pretty nondescript, but the movie is said to have drawn a lot of inspiration from the All-Star Superman run of comics, which sees a dying Superman undertake a series of mind-boggling feats before departing Earth to repair the Sun.
