Well, enough Looney Tunes for now... How about some Donkey Kong for a change of pace... and what a change of pace it is! This is going to require a bit of backstory.
So I have been following a YouTuber named Somecallmejohnny on YouTube since 2015. The first review I watched from him was his Corey in the House DS game during the Donator's Marathon he did back then, and I was instantly subbed... or maybe I'm remembering it wrong. But anyways, I would get hooked on his laid back and relaxing reviewing style of videos, be it Mario, Sonic or even licensed games like Spongebob Battle for Bikini Bottom. Some of my favorites included his Sonic '06 video, the Bubsy Woolies Strike Back video, and the Final Fantasy Mystic Quest video to name a few. But some of my recent favorites he did last year were the series of Donkey Kong reviews from the arcade classics to the Retro Studios developed Country games. These were very well done reviews, with very good humor, great editing and a great selection of games. I haven't watched all of them, because I don't want to spoil Tropical Freeze and Returns for myself. But the episodes on the portable Donkey Kong Land games, the original SNES DKC Trilogy and the DK64 video that ended with such an excellent parody of the DK Rap. And these were all released last year!
It's been my favorite marathon of Johnny Ortiz, so I decided to celebrate the first anniversary of his Donkey Kong marathon by doing what I do best on this channel... regurgitating snippets from other people's ad breaks! This will be focused mainly of two ads I have for the Donkey Kong Land games, both being of Japanese origin.
The first is for the original Donkey Kong Land game, one of the most unique games in the Rareware Donkey Kong games. While it does play and have similar level themes to the SNES Country game, the game heads outside the comfort zone with unique level themes like Gangplank Galleon, Kremlantis, cloud stages, and a big city as the last world thrown in the mix, new music by a newcomer composer, and crazy original bosses. It's a weird game... and I love it. Sure the controls are very limited, the physics are very rough and there's nothing that happens when you beat the game, either any% or 100%. But it still kept me on my toes with the challenging platforming, unique level themes mixed in with the recycled themes from Country 1, and flying pig enemies. In fact, it was one of the games I beat during 2022... the only game I beat in fact, due to it being a very short game. But it was a fun game nonetheless.
Oh, right there was an ad for it in Japan. This was used for French ads and even the North American ads as well. This copy comes from a 1995 Japanese ad break by CMライブラリ【ma】. The ad starts in Donkey Kong Country or Super Donkey Kong as it is known in Japan. DK is walking through Jungle Hijinx... he stops at the series of platforms with the Necky at the top... and then looks at the camera, then after a 300 promo... he runs towards the camera, hitting the screen! The screen then falls with DK and he comes out of the TV! He then sees a trail of bananas and follows them... to a plate of them... only to trip a trap that causes a Game Boy to fall on him.
