India’s top two telecom operators *deactivated* connections of more *than eight crore low-paying subscribers* as they focus on better-paying customers and lowering costs
1) Vodafone Idea Ltd. introduced a *minimum ARPU*, and *deactivated 3.5 Cr* users who bought recharge plans of less than Rs 35 a month in the December-ended quarter
2) Bharti Airtel Ltd. too had *dumped 4.8 crore* such users.
3) The focus of these two telecoms is to increase the ARPU as these operators faced a *tariff war* triggered by *Jio’s rock bottom pricing*
4) *Vodafone Idea* subscribers base fell from *42.2 Cr to 38.7 Cr* while *Airtel* noticed a dip in subscriber base from *33.2 Cr to 28.4 Cr*
5) *Reliance Jio’s* focus is on *customer acquisition* and it grew from *25.2 Cr to 28 Cr*
6) Airtel and Vodafone saw a marginal *increase in ARPU*. Vodafone Idea ARPU grew from *88 Rs to 89 Rs* while Airtel saw the increase from *100 Rs to 104 Rs*.
7) Increase in ARPU of these two telecoms didn’t boost *Operational performance*
8) Airtel Ebitda saw a decline from *2,147 Cr Rs to 1,950* Rs this quarter, while *Vodafone Ebitda* rose on the back from *978 Cr Rs to 1,137 Cr Rs*
9) *Reliance Jio’s Ebitda* is *4,052 Cr Rs*, after growing for yet another quarter, is more than the combined operating income of its two bigger rivals.
10) *Capital expenditure* of all telecom operators *declined* in the December-ended quarter. Their combined *Capital Expenditure fell* more than Rs* 6,000 crore*. *Reliance Jio’s* spending, however, remained *higher* than its* rivals*
11) *Bharti Airtel* was the only player which saw a drop in its *net debt*. Its consolidated debt fell by Rs *6,800 Cr* for the first time in the last six quarters
12) *Vodafone Idea* capital expenditure *declined* from *3,296 Cr Rs to 1,169 Cr Rs*
