JOKER WAS A VICTIM?! Joker (2019) Movie PART 1 Reaction
This is PART 1 of a movie #watchalong
This movie WON in the movie poll I made a few months ago, thank you to everyone who voted.
I absolutely LOVED this movie. Definitely, is now one of my favourite movies for the amazing acting by Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro and for the narrative that explored and explained how Arthur Fleck became Joker even though this is just one version of his story.
MINI REVIEW: I loved that a whole movie was dedicated to breaking down the tragic circumstances and mentality of Joker from a seriously broken man who was very much a victim of society's flaws to eventually becoming a sadistic serial killer and madman. It quite shocked me about how far they went to make Joker a very sympathetic character because in my opinion, I actually felt sorry for him especially during the first half of the movie.
The first half of the movie explored Arthur being a stand up comedian but at one point, getting jumped by a bunch of kids from the streets and then, almost getting fired by his boss for bringing a gun to a Children's Hospital. It also showed how much Arthur admired his role model, the comedian Murray and Murray exchanging some kind words only for that to be juxtaposed at the end with the brutal ending scene of Joker being led to kill his own role model because that role model turned out to be two-faced and humiliated him on live TV. Wow. One of my favourite movie scenes even though I felt quite pitiful that so many characters throughout the movie were being so horrible to Joker that it led him to become a corrupt, violent and murderous man.
I seriously hated how one of Arthur's colleagues gave Arthur the gun because that literally triggered that rage in him to take matters into his own hands and kill anyone who is basically mean to him. First, with the subway scene and then to his own mum, colleague and role model. Had he not been given that gun, perhaps Arthur would not have become as mentally unstable and corrupt as he became. Just a hypothesis. That being said though, I had no sympathy for those subway victims. They were A-holes.
That ending scene was AMAZING and particularly, was the most compelling even though I enjoyed the entire movie. Also, despite Joker saying that he was not into politics, he was making a comment about how everyone's so mean and complained about society's flawed standards about what's right or wrong, which is actually true. And then, for him to kill his own role model due to being so two-faced towards him...that has to be one of the best movie scenes ever.
Btw, during my commentary, I make some comparisons between Joaquin Phoenix's Joker and Heath Ledger's Joker but please don't mind it as I felt the need to make some commentary (otherwise it'd just be a silent reaction) and I LOVE both versions equally I think so please don't think that I'm favoring one over the other. I think both actors did amazing jobs. It's compelling me to watch other actors' portrayals of Joker now. Joker makes such an interesting villain.
