MINI REVIEW: I really loved it and I'm so glad I reacted to it as even though it was heartbreaking, it showcased the kind of struggle many people had back then during the war as rations and resources were scarce. I'm now more interested to find out more about how the Japanese coped during and after the war.
This is a heartbreaking tale of two children trying to survive during the Second World War in war-torn Japan...I felt really bad for Seita and Setsuko as their parents died one by one and they even got scolded by the aunt that took them in under her care. She failed to protect them and so, the two children decided to leave her care and survive on their own which sadly, led to both children starving and eventually dying. Obviously, I saw this coming because the movie had a strong sense of symbolism with the short-lived fireflies and also, because of the dark tone of the movie so it seemed obvious that both children would die by the end of the movie.
However, I didn't realise that the beginning scene already set us up for the movie's ending as Seita immediately said that he died but I didn't even realise that until AFTER watching the movie because as I was watching the movie, I forgot about what happened at the beginning so during editing, I rewatched the beginning which already told us that Seita died. My bad. So I know NOW that both children died and that the beginning scene happened after they both died from extreme starvation and malnutrition. Very tragic indeed...
