I started my Youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/c/FAHDieting) with two goals in mind: to focus on my weight loss for 3 years and to lose 300 pounds. I knew from past experiences that I needed a lifestyle change and not just another fad diet. I knew these were lofty goals, so I started my channel in hopes of holding myself accountable, and maybe even garnering a sense of community in the process. I go live every day to talk about diet, weight loss, my life, and what books I am reading.
I am 40 years old and married. My wife and I have four young children. I have been overweight my entire life. I was active in athletics in my youth and weighed around 275 in high school (the limit for heavyweight wrestlers). Like so many others, once my high school athletic career ended, the weight started to accumulate . I Yo-Yo'd for 20 years, hopping on fad diet after fad diet - Atkins, Advocare, WW, Phentermine, keto. You name it, I tried it.
In the past few years, I have seen more and more about fasting. Things like intermittent fasting, extended fasting, and one meal a day. I started playing around with extended fasting and found that I was pretty good at it. I fasted in 2019 for a month. I started at 480lbs. I lost 60 pounds, but I didn't know what to do at the end of the fast. I started eating keto and gained all of the weight back very rapidly. I felt pretty discouraged.
Fast forward to October 2020, and I knew I needed to make a change in my life. I was having a hard time doing anything. I still felt like I was active for someone weighing over 500 pounds, but in reality I was nearly sedentary. My legs were extremely swollen and had sores developing on them. I had severe sleep apnea, and probably a host of other medical problems. So, I started my Youtube channel and my challenge. With a starting weight of 520lbs I knew the fastest way to get the initial pounds off was going to be by fasting. I started my challenge by planning on doing a 30 day water fast. My goal during the fast was to develop my diet and meal plan for when I got done. Going into the challenge I really was leaning towards moving into a paleo diet after my fast. The mindset was to get as far away from the my current diet and go back to our roots.
While fasting, my goal was to educate myself as much as possible. I started in the same place any great researcher would - I got on Youtube. While looking for my answers, I stumbled across some videos from Well Your World where Dillion was staying at The True North Clinic. Everything he said resonated with how I was feeling at the time during my fast. That's when I found out about True North. I started looking into the clinic and was curious as to what they recommended their patients eat to refeed. Because that was a big concern for me, being that I was planning on fasting for so long. When I saw they were suggesting that people eat a WFPB SOS free diet, I was amazed. Nobody was talking about that and fasting. And here is this place that has had 20,000+ people come through their doors saying to eat plants. They were already doing something many considered crazy by having people fast. Why would they put any unnecessary stigma on themselves by having people eat this "crazy vegan diet"? Unless it works!
I picked up, and by picked up I mean my earbuds, The Pleasure Trap. I cannot express enough the insight this book has given me. I was hooked from the start. Came home and told my wife we needed to change to this diet and we jumped in with both feet. Like I said when I started I weighed 520 lbs. I water fasted for a total of 1,000hrs (42ish days) and lost 90lbs. Since that time I have been eating a WFPB SOS free diet and lost an additional 110lb. For a total of 200lbs lost in about a year.
