Jotun | Perfect Valhalla Trophy - All Bosses, No Damage
Perfect Valhalla - Beat Valhalla Mode without taking any damage. Timestamps and tips below. I've also included bonus "Shun the Gods" battles against Hagalaz and Odin, which I found to be the toughest fights in the game.
Using god powers for these damageless challenges is allowed, including Heimdall's Shield, which certainly reduces the difficulty and speeds-up the otherwise lengthy battles. This game is all about good positioning, patience, and activating your powers at the right moments. It's often better to be judicious, than to greedily overprioritize hitting a boss. No amount of dodge rolling will be able to save you if you're in a bad place when the boss begins an attack. Unlike many (superior) action games, Jotun doesn't feature a period of invincibility after being hit, so you can easily be combo-ed from full health to nothing in an instant, if things go south.
Disappointingly, many of the bosses are so heavy on randomness that it's often beyond your control if you succeed. Odin, Hagalaz, and Fé have particularly atrocious design in this regard. For example, if Odin's AI happens to use a nasty combination of jötunn summons and homing spears in the final phase, you're either getting hit or dying, unless you have a Heimdall's Shield to nullify it. Besides building the necessary skill, you will also have to get lucky, and that sucked all the fun out of this game for me. At least Fé has a really easy exploit, that makes perfecting her a breeze, as you'll see. I also discovered that the game's weird isometric perspective seriously messes with hitboxes and timings—it's especially noticeable with Fé's shield throw and Isa's ice breath. Depending on whether you're above or below the bosses, it changes how you have to deal with the attack. Deflecting Fé's shield from the bottom of the screen feels much easier than from the top, for instance. Additionally, sometimes the camera suddenly zooms way out, making it difficult to time things like hitting Odin's spears with your axe. Very irritating!
1. Jera (00:06) - One of the longer fights with this method, but pretty safe and easy. The biggest priority here is diligently keeping the vines trimmed down, or they'll block you and sneak a hit in. Beyond that, stay just below and to the right of the bottom flower, and heavy attack her hands, then charge in with Freya's Speed and Thor's Hammer to do a ton of damage, before retreating from the poison cloud. When she's nearly dead, Heimdall's Shield lets you comfortably finish her off. Don't forget about your spears and decoys, either, as they also take off a nice chunk of damage.
2. Fé (04:07) - Would be among the hardest, without this easy exploit. The dwarves are totally absurd! Just stand in the spot I do, remove any nearby dwarves, then use the Freya's Speed/Thor's Hammer combo to quickly deplete her health. Depending on where she summons dwarves, you may need to time one of your Thor's Hammer activations, so the AOE blows them away. Afterwards, simply finish her off with Odin's Spears—you literally never have to move! She cheats, so why shouldn't you?
3. Isa (05:39) - This took longer than I would have liked, but I played it safe towards the end. It's so important to always be moving perpendicular across his path before he begins charging, especially when the ground becomes ice. If you hesitate, or run back the other way, he'll likely run you over. Save yourself with Heimdall's Shield if this occurs, and if you happen to get caught in his ice breath, for that matter. After he's done charging (he does at least three in a row in the final phase), he'll either blow ice breath or slowly walk towards you before charging again, and it takes some practice to get the feel of which one it is. You can usually tell by the camera's behavior: if it zooms out in a certain way, he's about to blow. This is your prime opportunity to sprint in with Freya's Speed, then activate Thor's Hammer and get some big damage on him. If you can knock a cluster of ice into him, do it; it hurts! Try to save Odin's Spears to quickly end the dangerous final phase, and watch out that he doesn't collapse on top of you! I died to that twice...
4. Kaunan (09:04) - Probably the easiest boss for me, when his random trash fireballs don't ruin the attempt. Use your Odin's Spears early, then make him collapse with the ol' Freya's Speed & Thor's Hammer combo. When he begins jumping, deploy Loki's Decoy to control his landings, and use even more Freya/Thor to further reduce his health. Whenever he falls over, try to make sure you're moving/rolling into him, or he might push you back into the fire. His attacks actually aren't as difficult to dodge as they appear.
Ran out of space, so I'll post more in the comments below.
