This game in particular has a special place in my heart. Joy Ride Turbo is basically Microsoft's Mario Kart clone. When people think of Microsoft's racing games, they always think Forza, Project Gotham, or Midtown Madness, but for me, it has GOT to be Joy Ride. It is a Kart racer, as always, but it features your Xbox Live Avatar.

BigPark started developing the game in 2009, as Joy Ride, and it was supposed to be a free-to-play experience for your Xbox Live Avatar, albeit with extra stuff to buy with Microsoft Points, but due to Microsoft wanting to push the sales for the Kinect Sensor, aka "Project Natal", Development was changed from a downloadable free-to-play game to a retail Kinect-only game. That release was known as the 2010 game, Kinect Joy Ride. Even though I enjoyed the exercise and got the posture down when playing Kinect Joy Ride, the driving experience just isn't satisfying enough. And that is when Joy Ride Turbo released on the Xbox 360's Xbox Live Arcade in 2012. It retains the Controller-based controls like the 2009 version, but this time it is at a much cheaper $9.99 price, without the microtransactions. And ten years later, I would finally get all the achievements from this gem of a game.

In this video, I first take a look at the instructions, and then tackle all the Championships. I challenge myself by using a different vehicle for each championship. In this case, I use a Muscle car of my choice in a warm color for the Muscle only series, A neutral colored Truck for the Truck-only series, a Cool colored sports car for a Sport-only series, and a race version of a Sports car in any color for the 5 lap-per-round Grand Prix series.

Since I have an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, I am playing this through Xbox Cloud Gaming. That's what got me to record the gameplay.

As for my driving techniques, I basically avoid drifting with the X button and hope for the best by gripping the turn with the brakes and I also stay away from long slow jumps for my shortcuts. When in midair, I basically turn the left stick counter-clockwise just so I can easily pull off three stunts in one jump. For track exclusive tricks, In Badlands Motorplex, I basically take grip turns instead of drifting those tight corners, because drifting in the Motorplex always ends up with me in the wall. Another exploit I use is also found in the Twisted Canyon races, by driving underneath the first jump and pressing the Back button, I can skip a large portion of the track.

Unfortunately, I thought I could win all the events, but the Wrecking Ball Showdown had me frustrated since I am not used to handling a Truck around Badlands Motorplex. In which I took 2nd place overall TWICE in this video. Sometime, on my own Xbox Series S console, I know I can win that series.

Bitter disappointment aside, I'm sure this game is well worth the console space. So, consider playing it. It's even on Game Pass!
