After the abysmal box office results of Jason Takes Manhattan, Paramount sold the rights to the Friday the 13th franchise back to Sean S Cunningham, who then sold them to New Line Cinema in the hopes of pitting Jason Voorhees against their very own Freddy Krueger. Before this could happen, New Line decided to give Jason his own movie to introduce the character into their own library and titled it Jason Goes to Hell.
