KDE Plasma 5.22 Release Date
Here’s a planned timeline for KDE Plasma 5.22 release. The dates are incorrect in the official KDE release schedule wiki. However, I have calculated tentative dates based on the planned iterations. These may change as we move closer to the release.
Feature Freeze: April 29, 2021
Beta: May 13, 2021.
Final release: June 3, 2021
KDE Saw More Wayland Fixes This Week, Other Changes
As we get ready for spring, KDE developers continue polishing up their Wayland support for the Plasma 5.22 cycle.
It's been another busy week in KDE land especially on the Wayland/XWayland front while other areas of the free desktop stack have also been enjoying improvements. Some of the noteworthy KDE improvements this past week include:
- KDE Connect now supports replying to text messages from within the Plasma notification itself.
- The audio volume applet with the applications tab will now show what audio output device a given application is outputting to when hovering over the application name.
- KDE Partition Manager now reports the SMART status for all disks.
- Okular now behaves correctly for multi-monitor systems with different scaling factors.
- Pasting saved Klipper text into GTK applications under a KDE Plasma session now works.
- XWayland now responds immediately to fractional scaling factor changes rather than the current behavior of first needing a system restart.
KDE Plasma 5.22 Will Better Warn You If Your Disk Might Be Failing
One year into the pandemic the KDE developers remain as busy as ever advancing their free software desktop solution.
It was another busy week improving KDE by all the developers involved both with fixes to KDE Plasma 5.21 and related applications as well as looking ahead with feature work to Plasma 5.22 and the next round of app releases.
KDE developer Nate Graham has once again put out his nicely summarized overview of KDE changes that landed for the week. In going through those changes, some of this week's KDE highlights include:
- Notifications to the user when disks are detected that are not a full SMART failure but could lead to data loss soon. This Plasma 5.22 change stems from a user noticing GNOME Disks reporting disk damage but KDE did not. Basically, KDE will now report SMART failure codes to the user even if it doesn't result in a bad SMART status.
- The Elisa music player has a mobile interface to support Plasma Mobile and Android. Elisa also picked up support for playing AAC files.
- Improvements to the Plasma System Monitor application replacing KSysGuard in Plasma 5.22. Similarly this week brought fix so Plasma System Monitor hopefully won't crash on Wayland.
- The "Force Font DPI" setting in Plasma should now work again on Wayland.
- Kate supports jumping back to the previous cursor position.
Closing Notes
So, overall these are initial changes and enhancements that are expected at the moment. KDE Plasma 5.22 would be based on Qt 5.15 and KDE Frameworks 5.82. As always, a whole lot of bug fixes that are currently being added in Plasma 5.21 would be available in the new release. And yes, many merge requests are still pending. I am not sure whether we get to see another new wallpaper or any other major design changes such as the new Kickoff menu which was introduced in 5.21. Also, a bunch of Wayland fixes and improvements is expected to land as well.
So, Stay tuned.
