PinePhone Beta Edition will be available to order soon, and it will ship with Manjaro Linux and the KDE Plasma user interface pre-installed.
After sending tens of thousands of PinePhone Community Edition smartphones to enthusiasts, the Pine64 people recently ended the Community Edition program.
You will soon be able to purchase a PinePhone Beta Edition , which will ship with Manjaro Linux and the KDE Plasma user interface pre-installed.
It is called Beta because the software is still a work in progress.
But the hardware is practically finished and after encountering a series of potential delays due to component shortages, Pine64 says that PinePhone Beta Edition will be in pre-order next week , production should start soon and they can be shipped to customers at the end of April.
The main differentiator of the new PinePhone Beta Edition in relation to the previous models of the Community Edition is the pre-installed software.
The hardware, including version 1.2b of the printed circuit board, has not been changed. So, if you already have one, there is probably not much reason to invest in the new model, because you can always install Manjaro or another operating system on your own.
However, you get the new art from the official box if you choose the new model.
Buyers still have two options:
PinePhone Beta Edition with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage for $ 150
PinePhone Beta Edition Convergence Package with 3GB / 32GB + USB dock for $ 200
Pine64 also announced that work is progressing on official accessories, including a physical keyboard and a fingerprint reader.
Both were designed to connect to the pogo pins hidden by the phone's back cover, so both accessories will be integrated into replacement covers that will be available for purchase at the Pine64 Store soon.
The keyboard may be available in mid-May, while the fingerprint reader is about to be launched in the second quarter of 2021.
