Keff Plays Bloodborne (Part 6)
Bloodborne is subjectively one of the best games of the recent decade. It introduced a more fast past combat system centered around stopping enemy attacks through parries without giving a sense of being outpaced. Like all FromSoftware titles, the game at times can feel difficult as it requires you to change the way you approach the encounter that is causing troubles. In Bloodborne, the paradigm shift you must face is never something that is too radical, like having to change which attacks or timing strategies. This is due to the game being centered around timing, with difficulties arising from having to find when to apply your best attack. The game can be completed in around 12 hours, with the progression following in such a way that it does not overwhelm the player while offering new content that has a direct proportional relationship to progress. However, the variety of weapons to use that would be effective outside of PVP is seemingly sparse. As a rebuttal, large amount of experimentation is required to find which weapon suits your playstyle best, as the best weapon fortification is only obtainable through using a blood rock; only available once per playthrough in the base game without having to farm Chalice Dungeons. Although ranged combat using the left handed parry weapon is an integral part of the combat system, ranged combat cannot be focused on unlike previous FromSoftware titles where magic or miracles could be used in place of physical combat. This allows the game to keep a fresh outlook on the weapons that are available in the base game due to their sole effectiveness. The game also returns to healing items being a limited resource like in Dark Souls 2 and Demon Souls, however, unlike those titles it is harder to run out of healing items due to them being available for purchase in unlimited quantity from the start of the game. The Old Hunters DLC addresses the perceptive lack of weapons to use without having to go through too many lengths to unlock them. It also extends the game's length for a price that has a direct proportional relationship to the base game.
10/10
Recommend to buy for full price if you enjoy the subject of timing in FromSoftware titles.
