Keith courage in alpha zones on TurboGrafx 16 was it good? #keithcourage #retrogaming #turbografx16
Today, we’re diving back into the strange, pixelated world of Keith Courage in the Alpha Zones the launch title that NEC chose to lead the charge for the TurboGrafx 16. That’s right. Before Bonk headbutted his way onto the scene and before Splatterhouse splattered anything, this was the game that came bundled with the system in 1989.
You play as Keith, a kid who lives with his dad and somehow ends up fighting alien invaders by transforming into a giant mech. One minute you’re walking through a happy little village getting hit by frogs, the next you’re slicing demon robots in hellscapes. It’s two completely different games duct taped together one part RPG lite side scroller, one part anime flavored robot slasher and somehow, it was supposed to sell an entire console to the world.
Was it fun? Was it frustrating? Did it even make sense? We’re breaking down the graphics, controls, characters, fun factor, and asking the question nobody really asked: Was Keith Courage ever cool?
If you grew up with a TurboGrafx 16, rented this from your local Video Barn, or just remember staring at that bright yellow box wondering what the heck was going on this one’s for you.
